Frank Murphy

Frank has been a well respected contributor to this event in the past. Always plenty to say and usually with a wry twist of humour for good measure. A great speaker and a great Martial Artist, we're looking forward to welcoming Frank back to the podium.

Frank Murphy has filled almost every possible role as a professional martial arts instructor. In the early nineties he was chairman of a large Taekwondo organisation, and became one of the first UK instructors to embrace business concepts from America. Against a tide of opposition at the time, he used these methods to open a full time center in the UK, as well as four satellite schools, employing eleven instructors. For four years was a columnist for both instructor and students publications, he has travelled extensively to the US and lectured there. He has also appeared on Sky TV, produced a series of videos, and developed Kaizendo, a very sucessful martial art programme ideal for the adult market. He was the first Limited Liability Partnership to apply, and subsequently endure an investigation, and receive VAT exemption on behalf of the martial arts industry in the UK. Since then, he has sold his schools, and moved to Ireland where he currently enjoys a loyal following of distance learning students as well as being a sought after black belt examiner. He now also runs an adult specific school practicing Kaizendo with over 150 adult only students.
He began training in ITF Taekwondo, under Master Aiden Walsh in 1974 achieving his Black belt in Dublin in 1977 under a panel including the founder General Choi. In May 1996 he was promoted to 6th Degree Black Belt under Master Edward (Ted) Hopwood who was one of the first Black Belts of Taekwondo in the UK in the early sixties. During the last 10 years Frank Murphy has been involved with training a wide range of instructors from the UK and Ireland to as far as senior instructors from Australia. He has proven himself adept at handling a wide range of martial events such as large scale exhibitions, Black Belt Testing, Summer Camps, Professional Instructors Seminars and promotions such as the college of martial arts.
His CV includes, eight times Irish Taekwondo Champion, a member of the historic Irish Taekwondo Team who won the ITF World Championships in 1981. In 1995 was voted chairman of the Global Taekwondo International UK and this position exposed him to high media profile at a time when rapid changes were taking place within the UK martial arts scene. He was the main Taekwondo consultant for MAI magazine for over 10 years, wrote a regular column for MAIA magazine based in the USA and produced a series of Taekwondo instructional videos in 1999. In 2000 he successfully completed the American Council of Martial Arts Instructor Certification in Clearwater, Florida.
He was also the first European professional Martial Artist to be invited as a guest speaker to the 2003 MAIA world conference supershow in Las Vegas, USA. His academy in Gravesend, Kent, UK, was voted best martial arts academy for 2000, this was mainly due to a world class exhibition Team that featured an amalgamation of various styles. Today his former U.K Black Belts, as professionals, run successful full time Academies in Kent and Liverpool and have also had success on the mats, competing in the Clash of the Titans for four years running and more recently in the Ultimate Fighting Challenge arena.
He was voted British Taekwondo Instructor of the year in 2004 and that same year was given a lifetime achievement award from the UK martial arts fraternity at the Bytomic College of Martial Arts held in Birmingham. In 2006 he sold his Academy in Kent and returned to Ireland. He has been first choice for a wide number of professional instructors and schools for recognition of Black Belts testing for Taekwondo Degree Certification. No stranger to speaking and motivational engagements, he delivers compelling and outstanding presentations as his previous exploits at the college of martial arts have earned him glowing testimonies from professional instructors nationwide.
